FAQ

Common Questions

What is a PMHNP, and how is that different from a psychiatrist?

A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice nurse with specialized graduate training in mental health care, including the ability to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medication. Like a psychiatrist, a PMHNP can manage psychiatric medication — the two professions share overlapping training in mental health treatment.

Do I need a referral?

No referrals are needed.

Will I have to take medication?

Not necessarily. Your treatment plan is built around your goals, and medication is only one part of what Dr. ExampleDoc offers.

Can I see a therapist elsewhere and see Dr. ExampleDoc for medication?

Yes, many patients pair outside therapy with medication management here. If you'd like both under one roof, ask about the extended follow-up, which includes a dedicated therapy session.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Your visits are protected under HIPAA. Details are in our Notice of Privacy Practices.
